In a critical meeting in Kyiv, European leaders are gathering to strategize on boosting Ukraine’s air-defense capabilities and exerting further pressure on Russia amid escalating missile attacks on Ukrainian cities. The conference, dubbed the Coalition of the Willing, is spearheaded by Britain, France, and Germany, with participation from several other European leaders who are joining remotely. Also present is EU Council President Antonio Costa, underscoring the significance of the discussions.
The intensifying Russian missile strikes have increasingly targeted Kyiv and other urban areas in Ukraine, leading to civilian casualties and significant damage to residential infrastructure. In response, Ukraine has been vocal in its plea for additional air-defense systems and interceptor missiles from its allies to safeguard its people. This call for assistance comes as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reports a notable decline in the delivery of Patriot interceptor missiles, highlighting that Ukraine received 675 such missiles in 2023, a number that is expected to drop to 364 in 2025, with further reductions projected for 2026.
As part of the ongoing discussions, Britain is anticipated to announce further support for Ukraine, while France is set to initiate local production of the long-range SCALP missile. Additionally, France has committed to supplying more interceptor missiles, aiming to fortify Ukraine’s air defenses against the persistent threat of Russian ballistic missiles. These missiles pose a considerable challenge due to their difficulty in interception, making the need for advanced Western air-defense systems even more pressing for Ukraine.
With the winter season approaching, Kyiv is urgently seeking at least 300 interceptors to bolster its defenses. The European allies, recognizing Ukraine’s dependence on sophisticated air-defense systems, are exploring ways to enhance supplies while simultaneously maintaining diplomatic and economic pressure on Moscow. This concerted effort highlights the continued solidarity and support for Ukraine from its European partners as they navigate the complexities of the ongoing conflict.
