In an effort to address the protracted Cyprus dispute, the European Union is stepping up its role by appointing new envoys and reiterating its backing for the United Nations-led peace initiatives. This move comes as the UN Secretary-General António Guterres is anticipated to visit the region soon. The EU aims to bolster the peace process, which has seen negotiations stall since 2017.
Despite the EU’s intentions, Turkish Cypriot authorities have raised concerns about the bloc’s ability to act impartially, pointing out that the Republic of Cyprus is an existing EU member, which they believe compromises the EU’s neutrality. They have also expressed dissatisfaction over the EU’s decision to appoint a new envoy for Cyprus without prior consultation with the Turkish Cypriot side.
The European Commission has responded by stating that its special representative will focus on fostering trust between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities and will work towards reigniting negotiations within the UN’s established framework. EU officials have affirmed their dedication to supporting efforts that could lead to a sustainable resolution.
