Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has announced his commitment to vigorously defend Iran’s positions during his upcoming visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. This international event offers Iran a platform to articulate its views amidst ongoing regional disputes.
Before leaving for New York on Tuesday, President Pezeshkian emphasized Iran’s resolve to uphold the rights and interests of its citizens on the world stage. His visit comes at a time when Iran is navigating complex geopolitical challenges, including a lingering dispute over the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz, a key artery for global oil and gas transport.
Accompanying the president’s efforts, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York a day earlier to lead Tehran’s delegation at the annual UN gathering. Upon his arrival, Araghchi engaged in a telephone conversation with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, touching on topics pertinent to the General Assembly. Araghchi stated that Iran’s primary goal at the assembly is to spotlight the legitimacy, rights, and interests of the Iranian populace.
During the session, Araghchi is also slated to meet with other foreign ministers and officials, further emphasizing Iran’s diplomatic agenda. The Iranian participation in the UN assembly is set against the backdrop of U.S. measures targeting Iranian ports and Tehran’s communication of conditions via Qatar for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
