In a bid to bolster economic ties, India’s Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently engaged in separate dialogues with Finland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, Riikka Purra, as well as the Minister of Economic Affairs, Sakari Puisto. These meetings aimed to enhance trade and investment relations between India and Finland, focusing on key areas of interest for both nations.
Central to their discussions was the potential for expanded collaboration in vital sectors such as digitalisation, innovation, and research and development. The conversations further delved into fostering partnerships in startups and business collaborations. Moreover, both countries expressed a keen interest in exploring joint opportunities in cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, 6G, quantum technologies, semiconductors, space exploration, and sustainability initiatives.
The proposed India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA) emerged as a significant topic of interest during these talks. Both India and Finland explored how this agreement could serve as a catalyst for boosting bilateral trade, attracting investments, and creating new business opportunities. The discussions underscored the potential benefits of the FTA in enhancing economic cooperation between the two countries.
