Tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean have been a longstanding concern, as disputes between Türkiye and Greece over maritime boundaries and the military status of Aegean islands persist. Despite efforts to improve diplomatic relations in recent years, these unresolved issues continue to pose challenges. In this context, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has called on Greece to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions in the region.
Fidan specifically expressed concerns over Greece’s increasing defense cooperation with Israel, which includes the deployment of military assets on Aegean islands. Türkiye argues that such actions violate demilitarization agreements. While Türkiye aims to maintain amicable relations with Greece, Fidan emphasized the importance of Athens considering Türkiye’s security concerns.
Greece, on the other hand, maintains that its defense strategies are driven by security needs and its sovereign right to protect national interests. The Greek government views its military measures as necessary for safeguarding its territories and ensuring regional stability.
In addition to these regional concerns, Fidan also criticized Israel’s military operations in Syria, suggesting they could destabilize the region further. Türkiye supports Syria’s initiatives to restore stability and governance, advocating for diplomatic solutions to regional disputes.
Furthermore, Fidan highlighted ongoing regional security collaborations, particularly involving Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. These countries are working on developing a structured security partnership, aiming to enhance cooperation on various security issues, including those related to Yemen and threats to Saudi Arabia. Through such diplomatic efforts, Türkiye seeks to promote regional stability and coordination.
