Spotify Adjusts Strategy, Excludes AI Artists from Recommendation Algorithms.

Spotify is rolling out new initiatives to address the rising presence of AI-generated music on its platform. Beginning in September, the streaming service will tag AI-created artist profiles and tracks with an “AI persona” label. This effort is designed to help users differentiate between human performers and artificial artist identities, while also safeguarding the visibility of real musicians from being overshadowed by AI-driven content.

In a bid to maintain authenticity and transparency, Spotify will exclude AI personas from its default personalized recommendations. This is part of a broader strategy to ensure that users are aware of whether the music they are enjoying is crafted by human artists or artificial intelligence. Spotify will permit artists to voluntarily disclose when their identity is AI-generated. However, the platform will also deploy both human moderators and AI-powered tools to identify those who do not voluntarily disclose their artificial nature.

This development comes amid a significant surge in AI-generated music, which has been flooding digital music platforms. Spotify recently reported the removal of 75 million spam tracks within a single year, underscoring the magnitude of low-quality and artificial content that is being uploaded. The company’s efforts are aimed at preserving the integrity of music discovery for its users and ensuring that genuine human artistry remains prominent.

As generative AI technology becomes increasingly prevalent in the music industry, Spotify emphasizes the growing need for transparency. Listeners today seek clarity about whether the creator behind a track is a real individual or a digitally constructed entity. By implementing these measures, Spotify aims to address the evolving landscape of music streaming and maintain a clear distinction between human and AI-generated contributions.
