Heavy rainfall is sweeping across Istanbul, significantly increasing the risk of flooding and causing potential disruptions to transportation. The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality’s Disaster Coordination Center has issued warnings as rain is expected to intensify around 11 a.m., following earlier showers in parts of the city. The rainfall is projected to persist through the afternoon before gradually diminishing by about 4 p.m.
Alongside the rain, temperatures in Istanbul have plummeted due to the influx of cooler air, with morning readings around 14°C, remaining below the usual seasonal averages throughout the day. This shift in weather is further complicated by a mix of cold air aloft and warm, moisture-laden air near the surface, setting the stage for thunderstorms, lightning, and strong showers.
Meteorological authorities have cautioned residents and officials in Istanbul, as well as several provinces within the Marmara and western Black Sea regions, about the possibility of sudden flooding, strong winds, lightning, and potential transportation hiccups.
Despite the immediate challenges, weather conditions are anticipated to improve by Thursday. Forecasts suggest a rise in temperatures to around 21°C, with no significant rainfall expected, offering some relief from the current adverse weather.
