Trump’s Summit Train Derailed: No “Immediate” Meeting with Putin

President Trump’s fast-moving plan for a summit with Vladimir Putin has been derailed. A US official said Tuesday that “no plans” exist for a meeting in the “immediate future,” just days after Trump announced one for Budapest.

The Kremlin confirmed the change in tempo, stating there is “no precise timeframe” for a summit.

The whiplash began after Trump’s phone call with Putin last Thursday. Trump hailed it as “progress” and quickly posted on social media about a two-week timeline for a Budapest meeting.

This led to a “productive” follow-up call on Monday between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

However, the anonymous US official clarified that this call was sufficient for now, stating an in-person meeting between the diplomats was “not necessary” and that no presidential summit was scheduled. This shift comes as Trump was also set to discuss providing Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine.
